Inconel Machined Parts by Application and Industry

Each industry brings its own grades, specs and paperwork. Knowing them helps you write an RFQ that reaches shops already used to that kind of work.

Typical parts, grades and drawing callouts

The grades and callouts shown are the ones most often seen in each field, not a rule. Your drawing decides.

Industry by industry

What changes from one field to the next, and what to mention on the RFQ so the right shops see it.

  • AerospaceTurbine and hot-section hardware where strength at temperature and fatigue life both matter. Drawings carry AMS specs, surface integrity limits and FAI requirements. Shops need traceable stock and documented processes. Inconel in aerospace
  • Power generationIndustrial gas turbine parts are larger and made in smaller batches than aero parts. Combustor and seal hardware in Hastelloy X and 625 often combines machining with forming and welding.
  • Oil and gasDownhole tools, completion hardware and valve trim see H2S, chlorides and high pressure. Age-hardened 718 and 925 for strength, 825 and 625 for corrosion. Hardness limits under NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 often apply. Inconel in oil and gas
  • Chemical processingWetted parts in pumps, valves and reactors, where C-276 and 625 resist acids that attack stainless. Surface finish on wetted faces and PMI on every lot are common requests.
  • MarineMonel 400 and K-500 for seawater pump and propeller shafts, fasteners and valve parts. Long shafts bring straightness and runout callouts that decide the process route.
  • Heat treatment and furnacesFixtures and baskets in 600, 601 and Hastelloy X are often fabricated and welded, then machined at locating features. Tolerances are looser, but flatness after welding matters. 600 and 601 for fixtures
  • Exhaust and motorsportThin-wall 625 and 718 collectors, flanges and turbo hardware, where weight and heat both count. Low volumes and fast design changes make prototype pricing the main concern.

What to put on the RFQ for each application

A shop that already works in your industry reads these items as routine. Leaving them out leads to quotes that cannot be compared.

  • Grade and specThe UNS number and the ASTM or AMS spec, not just the trade name.
  • ConditionAnnealed, solution treated or aged, and whether finishing must follow heat treatment. See machining processes.
  • Industry standardNACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 for sour service, AS9102 FAI for aerospace, or your own company spec.
  • DocumentsMill certs, PMI, dimensional reports and NDT, and whether they apply to every lot.
  • Quantity and timingPrototype quantity and annual volume. Lead times explained

Questions about Inconel applications

Which Inconel grade is most used in aerospace?

718 by a wide margin, for rotating and structural hot-section parts up to roughly 650 to 700°C. Waspaloy and X-750 cover higher temperatures or spring and seal duties, and 625 and Hastelloy X show up in sheet-metal combustor and exhaust hardware.

Do oil and gas parts in Inconel need NACE compliance?

If the part sees sour service, the operator usually requires NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliance. That standard sets hardness and heat treatment limits per alloy. Put the requirement on the RFQ so only shops that already work to it quote.

Why use Monel instead of stainless steel on marine parts?

Monel 400 and K-500 resist seawater and resist pitting and crevice corrosion where common stainless grades can fail in stagnant or low-oxygen seawater. K-500 adds the strength needed for pump and propeller shafts.

Can I get a single prototype machined in Inconel?

Yes. The RFQ form accepts quantities from 1 piece and we match shops that take prototype work. Setup, programming and material minimums dominate the price at that quantity, so expect a high unit cost compared with a production batch.
